THE HISTORY OF NEIGHBOUR LABOUR & NEW LANDSCAPES - DIRECTOR DAVE JANZOW

At the young age of 8, Dave Janzow realised his passion for - and identified an opportunity in - outdoor work. He was inspired to commence regular garden maintenance for his neighbours in the Eastern suburbs of Adelaide.

At the age of 10, as demand increased, Dave began his first business, "Dave's Odds 'n' Ends", in 1987.  In 1994, at 17 years of age, Dave established a small team and registered the Neighbour Labour business name due to an increasing client base.

Whilst Dave completed his Bachelor of Environmental Management at Flinders University, he continued the Neighbour Labour business with up to 13 staff employed at one time.

Between 2000 and 2005, the skills base of his staff - and therefore the business - rose dramatically, enabling Neighbour Labour to begin to provide landscape construction services to complement the existing gardening maintenance services.  At this time, the New Landscapes brand was added to the business to reflect this expansion in services and capability.

Today, Dave's successful business is based in Kent Town and staffed by a youthful, passionate, efficient and highly qualified team with training in Horticulture and Horticultural Management; Landscape Construction; Irrigation Design and Installation; Garden Lighting; Environmental Management and Project Management.

Neighbour Labour & New Landscapes is a member of the Landscape Association of SA (LASA) and the Housing Industry Association (HIA).

ENVIRONMENTAL INFLUENCE

With the many decisions the Neighbour Labour team make throughout the design and construction phases of our work, we always consider the impact we have on the natural environment, such as;

  • Selecting plants where possible that are locally grown, drought tolerant and best suited to the aspect and local environment;
  • Focusing primarily on the installation of our premium quality artificial lawn, Regal Grass, and using only drought tolerant varieties of natural lawn;
  • Installation of professionally designed sub-surface drip irrigation systems for gardens and lawns, ensuring maximum water efficiency and reduced evaporation. The drip irrigation systems we install also help to build the drought tolerance of plants and lawn (deeper water penetration through these systems encourages more resilient root systems);
  • Utilising locally produced organic mulches and soil conditioners to assist in the reduction of weed species and to improve water retention and quality of garden soils;
  • Where possible we aim to use recycled products such as the Regal Grass underlay, and to ensure the recycling of materials such as concrete, clean fill and green waste.
